Question 1

According to Daniel Lewis, what do you think is the difference between learning positions and moving through positions?

According to Daniel Lewis, learning positions is about teaching yourself how to dance. Position A, position B, position C, individually. Learning how to do each of those steps individually. However, moving through positions is about the transition from A to B to C. What you do in between to get from one move to another.

The Limon technique is not based off positions but motion and movement, and how that movement relates to those positions is the important part. Here are some important elements of this technique mentioned in the video:

·         Succession-sequential flow of movement through the body

·         Full- we are trapped on this earth by gravity. Let gravity to pull us to earth and feel the lift away from it: opposition

·         Re-bound and recovery: to use the energy from falling in a different way. These are two ways of re-directing full.

o   Rebound, we use energy to come back up again.

o   Recovery is like a pendulum and recovering to find a nice suspension.

·         Highpoint

·         Alignment of head, shoulders, hips, waist, and feet… moving into and away of alignment

·         Opposition

·         Weight- opposition of body against weight.

Question 2

After experiencing the first 15 minutes of the video above, what do you think about the technique?

I think it is a technique that uses the body as a whole. It consists of a whole preparation of the body in order to be able to create movement. I can see that it is a very complete technique. The sequence to it makes sense, first you release the tension, relax your muscles, and allow more movement to appear. You then continue with isolations, shoulder and then spinal isolations, and then you are able to experiment how your head connects to your shoulders, waist, creating alignment. Then there is floor work and isolation lying down, and then bounces and relevé. Overall it sounds like a technique of great body preparedness and control. Feeling and working all these different parts also helps improve the range of motion of a dancer.

Limón Technique

Please, click on the link above, read the article and summarize the key concepts of Limon technique.

The article talks about how Limon´s technique is based on ordinary movements that you can see outside like a ball bouncing against gravity, or a swinging swing. His dance focuses on the dynamic use of energy and weight in the body and moving in a fluid way from one movement to the next. All of these motions and sensations that you feel as you experiment them in your body, prepare you to use these while dancing in their full range of motion.

The key concepts of Limon technique include breathe and its influence on movement, the impact of weight on body parts and how that allows you to connect with expression, flexibility of the spine, body-parts isolations, the dynamism between fall and recovery. However, these concepts are to be felt and focused-on so that you can imitate their quality of movement and the feeling they provoke within you when you dance. These concepts make you be more aware of your body and how it moves.

  1. According to Lewis, learning positions versus moving through positions are two separate things. If you move through positions, you aren’t doing them properly because you're simply trying to finish them as quickly as possible without taking the beauty of it into consideration. Learning positions take time and effort, but by the end, it’s more of a masterpiece that if formed.
  2. I think the spine isolation is very interesting. I like the different stretches because they’re very slow and looks relaxing. I would love to learn the technique and not move through it.
  3. Limon is one of the 20th centuries most influential dancers. He pioneered American Modern Dance. He was the first artist in any medium to represent the United States as a cultural ambassador. He was able to overcome the hardships of society through dance.
  4. His form includes body-part isolations with fall and recovery. You have to focus on the quality and feeling of the movement rather than doing it just to get it over with. It’s body awareness and human wholeness.

1) Learning position seems to be the position that allows you to observe what it is you are going to do before you do it. Moving through positions is the actual process of moving from one position into the next.

2) this technique seems to bring a sense of lightness to the body. The transition from one movement to the next is very smooth while also focusing on the balance of still yet complex movements, like a rough ball.

3) Jose Limon is a Mexican born dancer who's formed an expressive and lively technique The Limon technique that he created focuses on breathing as well as how you hold your body weight through your body.

4) Overall Limon technique allows momentum to take over your body.Key concepts such as balance, flexibility, and isolation of body parts are very important as Jose focuses on " human wholeness"
